The Case for Artificial General Intelligence: Turing’s Vision at 75

Seventy-five years after Turing posed his famous question about machine intelligence, we argue the answer has arrived. Large language models now pass the Turing test, achieve gold-medal performance at international mathematics competitions, solve PhD-level problems across multiple fields, and assist with frontier scientific research. Yet many experts deny these systems constitute artificial general intelligence (AGI). We suggest this disconnect is part conceptual, part emotional, and part commercial. By reasonable standards, including Turing’s own, the long-standing problem of creating AGI has been solved. For the first time in human history, we are no longer alone in the space of general intelligence.


Speaker Bio

Presenter: Eddy Keming Chen is an associate professor of philosophy and a faculty affiliate of the Halıcıoğlu Data Science Institute and the Chinese studies program at UC San Diego. His primary research interests are foundations of AI, philosophy of physics, philosophy of science, and metaphysics. He received his PhD in philosophy and an MSC in mathematics from Rutgers University.
