How Plants Can Combat Climate Change

Climate change profoundly and negatively affects the vast majority of our planet’s biota. Plants are central agents in earth’s carbon cycle. This lecture will discuss efforts to engineer plant roots with enhanced carbon sequestration capabilities to combat climate change. Dr. Miller’s work has significant implications for both climate change mitigation and sustainable agriculture. Her research aims to engineer plants that are resilient to environmental stress by storing more carbon underground and improving soil health.
Speaker Bio
Presenter: Charlotte Miller, a plant geneticist and scientist at the Salk Institute’s Plant Biology Laboratory, is a key member of the Harnessing Plants Initiative which focuses on engineering plants to combat climate change. She completed her PhD at the John Innes Centre in the UK, where she studied natural genetic variation in canola for biofuel optimization.
