Developments on the Korean Peninsula

The Korean Peninsula continues to be a potential flash point in the Asia-Pacific. For North Korea, the war in Ukraine provided an opportunity for Kim Jong Un to jump-start a flailing economy, and perhaps to reduce his dependence on China. Nuclear weapons remain a central policy concern. For South Korea, Trump’s ambivalence about the alliances and new economic policy have posed policy challenges. This lecture will review recent developments on the Korean Peninsula—North and South—and explore options for diplomacy toward Northeast Asia should look like.
Speaker Bio
Presenter: Stephan Haggard is distinguished research professor at the School of Global Policy and Strategy and research director for democracy and global governance at the Institute on Global Conflict and Cooperation. He has written widely on North Korea, including on the famine of the 1990s, refugees and the sanctions regime against the country. Professor Haggard received his PhD from UC Berkeley.
