Osher Lifelong Learning Institute

Created in California, An Art History of the Golden State. Varied Views: 1980–2000

Speaker Elizabeth Rooklidge, M.A.
Coordinator Steve Clarey
This lecture completes the Fall 2024 Master Class
on An Art History of the Golden State by art historian
Elizabeth Rooklidge. Video recordings of her prior
lectures are available in the Osher online video
library.
The counterculture movement of the 1960s
and 1970s gave way to a California art
defined, by and large, by its multiplicity. Artists in
the last two decades of the 20th century worked
in an array of media, marked by shades of stark
discontent, bold humor, cutting critique and,
increasingly, complex negotiations around identity
and belonging. Artists include Laura Aguilar, Mike
Kelley, James Luna, Catherine Opie, Lari Pittman and
Faith Ringgold, among others.
