Osher Lifelong Learning Institute
An Integrative Medicine Approach to COVID and Emerging Infectious Diseases
Speaker
Gordon Saxe, M.D., Ph.D., M.P.H.
Coordinator
Jim LaCombe
This lecture will examine the role of diet, nutrition,
and natural products in enhancing immunity and
combating COVID-19, while addressing lessons for
future pandemics, including the potential threat of
H5N1/Bird Flu. It will highlight findings from the
MACH-19 study, a series of randomized clinical
trials undertaken at UC San Diego and UCLA at the
inception of the pandemic, investigating the use
of mushrooms and Chinese herbs in COVID-19. It
will also introduce a trial at UC San Diego studying
dietary intervention for individuals with long COVID.
These groundbreaking approaches may shape future
medical practice and enhance our preparedness and
response to emerging infectious diseases.
