Happy International Women’s Day! UC San Diego Extended Studies is proud to #InspireInclusion on the annual occasion, joining voices from across the world to raise awareness about gender equality and women’s rights.

Celebrated annually on March 8, International Women’s Day is a global occasion honoring the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. It is also a day to raise awareness about gender equality and women's rights. This year, while reflecting on the remarkable achievements of women around the world, UC San Diego Extended Studies honors the trailblazing legacy of astronaut Sally Ride, the namesake of Sally Ride Science @ UC San Diego.

Sally Ride: Pioneering Woman in STEM and Space Exploration

Sally Ride was a pioneering figure in space exploration and a trailblazer for women in STEM (science, technology, engineering, and mathematics). On June 18, 1983, she made history as the first American woman to fly in space aboard the space shuttle Challenger. Ride's groundbreaking achievements shattered stereotypes and inspired generations of women to pursue careers in fields traditionally dominated by men.

Beyond her historic spaceflight, Ride was a passionate advocate for STEM education and gender equality. She co-founded Sally Ride Science, an organization dedicated to inspiring young people, especially girls, to pursue careers in science, math, and technology.

International Women's Day 2024: #InspireInclusion

Upon the occasion of International Women's Day 2024, UC San Diego Extended Studies honors Sally Ride's legacy by recognizing the achievements of women in all fields and reaffirming a commitment to gender equality. This year's theme, "#InspireInclusion," calls on individuals and organizations to imagine a gender equal world, free of bias, stereotypes, and discrimination, and to collectively inspire a world where difference is valued and celebrated.

On this day, we celebrate the achievements of women like Sally Ride who have broken barriers and paved the way for others. We also recognize the work that still needs to be done to achieve true gender equality. By acknowledging the contributions of women in all walks of life and recognizing the adventures (and challenges) of being a woman in STEM, we can inspire future generations to dream big and reach for the stars.

Announcing the Women in Leadership 2024 Panel

As part of the International Women's Day 2024 celebrations, Sally Ride Science @ UC San Diego announces the featured panel for the annual Women in Leadership event on May 23, 2024. The sixth annual gathering will continue a tradition of bringing together prominent women leaders from various fields to share their experiences and insights on leadership, gender equality, and empowering the next generation of women leaders.

Through a candid and timely discussion, this year's distinguished panel will share their personal stories and vision of how women can help lead our nation to a better future. Featured participants include Ina Garten, cookbook author and television host; Michelle Hanabusa, founder and creative director of UPRISERS® and co-founder of Hate Is A Virus; and Margot Lee Shetterly, author of “Hidden Figures,” the No. 1 New York Times Bestseller and No. 1 hit film. Lynn Sherr, author and award-winning journalist, will moderate the discussion.

The Women in Leadership event highlights the importance of gender diversity in leadership roles and provides a platform for women to network, learn, and grow. The opportunity is open to all in the community to attend. UC San Diego Extended Studies produces the event and broadcasts the recording on UCTV, collaborating with partners on the UC San Diego campus and in the San Diego community to allow students of all ages and grades to participate.
