Ethics Center presents researcher Kurzrock: 'Winning the war against cancer in the genomics era...'

As cancer research continues to make exponential strides toward a cure, there’s an equal urgency for personalized clinical trials that match patients with cutting-edge treatments, techniques and procedures.

One of the leaders in this fast-emerging field is UC San Diego’s Razelle Kurzrock, MD, who will outline the latest advances as the featured speaker on Wednesday, Dec. 4, 2013, 5:30 to 7 pm at Balboa Park’s Reuben H. Fleet Science Center, Community Forum, 1875 El Prado, San Diego, CA 92101. The event is free and open to the general public.

Kurzrock’s presentation — “Winning the War Against Cancer in the Genomics Era: Is It About Time?” — will examine the newest techniques in the testing of innovative cancer-fighting therapies. The Ethics Center series focuses on cancer, as seen through the lens of Siddhartha Mukherjee's acclaimed best-selling book “The Emperor of All Maladies.”

The event is the latest installment of The Center for Ethics in Science and Technology lecture series for 2013-14.

Before coming to UC San Diego Moores Cancer Center about a year ago, Kurzrock was best known for successfully creating the world’s largest Phase I clinical trials department while at the University of Texas’ M.D. Anderson Cancer Center.

Since her arrival, she has created a similar on-campus clinical trials program that focuses on personalized medicine. The new program’s on-site locale is especially timely, given the ever-growing cluster of San Diego’s biotech and pharmaceutical firms and institutes within close proximity to the UC San Diego campus.
