UC San Diego Extension executive director honored by San Diego Business Journal

Dr. Josh Shapiro, the Executive Director of UC San Diego Extension’s Center for Applied Research and Evaluation (C.A.R.E), was honored by the San Diego Business Journal as one of 2018's “San Diego’s Next 40 Top Business Leaders Under 40” on August 14. He was one of three UC San Diego community members recognized at the event.
 
Before coming to UC San Diego, Dr. Shapiro worked in the conflict resolution field in Washington D.C., served as a public school teacher in South Carolina, and built homes with Habitat for Humanity in Louisiana. With a passion for serving in the nonprofit realm, he collaborates with a variety of organizations to determine workforce trends and conduct regional economic studies, program evaluations and a variety of data-driven projects. Examples of his work include being a core evaluator of the effectiveness of the Department of Labor’s Wired initiative, as well as researching and preparing labor market and innovation reports for a wide range of organizations.
 
Dr. Shapiro also leads Extension’s market research team, which focuses on assisting educational programs to conduct market research and curricula development for workforce and education training programs. He has taught classes on research methodology for UC San Diego and is trained in both qualitative and quantitative methodologies with a specialization in survey design. He holds a Ph.D. and M.A. in sociology from UC San Diego and a B.A. in social thought and analysis from Washington University in St. Louis.
