Brewing certificate program teams with Karl Strauss

San Diego-based Karl Strauss Brewing Company has joined with UC San Diego Extension to offer two full scholarships in 2014, with a single re-occurring annual scholarship starting in 2015.

The scholarships will be funded through the nonprofit Karl Strauss Brewers Education Fund, established after the firm’s founder, German brew master Karl Strauss, passed away in 2006.

The fund provides financial and educational support to those aspiring to pursue a career in San Diego County’s brewing industry, which now includes some 80 craft breweries and generates more than $300 million in its annual economic impact.

“The response to our Brewing Certificate program has been overwhelming and we are very enthusiastic about our partnership with Karl Strauss,” said Peter Thomas, Associate Director of the Arts, Humanities, Languages, and Digital Arts department at UC San Diego Extension. “As a pillar of the San Diego brewing community for 25 years, it seemed like a natural fit for our program.”

Extension’s Brewing Certificate instructors are all professional brewers and industry experts, including Lead Instructor Yuseff Cherney, Co-Founder, COO and Head Brewer and Distiller at Ballast Point. Other prominent local companies represented include Automatic Brewing, Lost Abbey, Port Brewing, Stone Brewing, The Bruery, and White Labs.

Launched in 2013, UC San Diego Extension’s Professional Certificate in Brewing was the first of its kind in Southern California. The program consists of part-time, evening and weekend sessions that offer academic and practical training for entry-level brewing professionals and can be completed in 18 to 24 months.
