On the Rise: The Business Side of Biotech

Grand View Research recently forecasted that by 2025 it will be a $727 billion industry, up from just under $400 billion in 2016. From the prevalence of chronic diseases and the falling costs associated with DNA sequencing to the need for agricultural innovation in the face of climate change, the demand for biotechnology solutions is only growing.

And you don’t necessarily need to be a research scientist or medical doctor to make an impact. The need for project managers, bioinformatics experts, recruiters and leadership professionals is growing, at companies large and small. Training in the specific challenges of this highly regulated industry—the different phases of discovery, development, testing and manufacturing—is key to breaking in.

UC San Diego Extension has several programs, certificates and workshops geared toward careers in the field:

Applied Bioinformatics
Clinical Trials & Regulatory Affairs
Drug Discovery & Development
