Level Up Your Spanish and English: Learn Translation & Interpretation Skills That Set You Apart

Demand for qualified translators and interpreters is strong in California, with nearly 7 million people speaking limited English. Our Spanish/English program is designed for bilingual high school students interested in developing professional skills in translation and interpretation. Students receive high-level instruction and hands-on training that will set them apart in future academic and career opportunities.

To enroll, students must demonstrate total fluency in both English and Spanish, including the ability to speak, read, and write at a second-year university level. Fluency is determined by a written online entrance exam.

All students will begin with the Introduction course, then choose between the Translation track or the Interpretation track. The introductory course may be taken before completing the entrance exam.

Learning Format:

Online | 3 - 9 Months

Enjoy the flexibility of learning at your own pace while the course is open. Courses are 100 percent online, with no in-person meetings. You will have access to the course materials for about 3-weeks per course during the Summer quarter and about 10-weeks per course during the Fall, Winter, and Spring quarters. This program is a cohort. Enrolled students will take all 3 courses together and in order.

What you will learn:

• Identify and evaluate potential career opportunities within the translation and interpretation professions, demonstrating an understanding of the diverse settings and sectors in which interpreters operate.
• Articulate the multifaceted role of the translator and interpreter, including the responsibilities, challenges, and ethical considerations inherent in the profession.
• Analyze and apply the administrative aspects of translation and interpretation work, including client relations, scheduling, and documentation, in various professional contexts.
• Demonstrate proficiency in the three primary modes of interpretation—sight, consecutive, and simultaneous—by effectively employing techniques appropriate to each mode.
• Differentiate between the various domains of translation and interpretation, such as legal, medical, business, community, and conference settings, and apply appropriate strategies and terminology specific to each area.
• Assess and address ethical dilemmas in translation and interpretation, drawing on a well-developed understanding of professional standards and codes of conduct.
