SAT Test Prep
EDUC-90029
Increase Your SAT Score
The SAT test is an entrance exam administered by the College board which is then used by many colleges and universities to make student admissions decisions. The purpose of the SAT is to measure a student's readiness for college, and provide colleges with one common data point that can be used to compare all applicants. In addition to a SAT score, college admissions officers will review GPAs, the classes a student took in high school, letters of recommendation from teachers or mentors, extracurricular activities, admissions interviews, and personal essays. The higher a student scores on the SAT will result in more options for attending and paying for college.
Students participating in this course will focus on the skills and strategies needed to obtain their highest possible SAT score. This includes learning and implementing effective test-taking tactics while focusing on the content of the test in the categories or reading, writing and language, and math.

Instructor: Flann Maguire
Flann Maguire is a native Californian who has been, among other things, a field worker for U.S. Government surveys, a yacht salesman, a surfboard shop owner, a real estate appraiser, and an educator. He has been in the tutoring/teaching field for nearly 30 years, teaching subjects as varied as Spanish, French, history, English, English as a second language, and math. For the last 15 years he has specialized in test prep, including the SAT, ACT, GRE, and SAT subject tests.
Flann started tutoring in the early 1990s and became the director of the Encinitas Study Hall, a tutoring center that focused not only on school curriculum but also good study habits, shortly thereafter. In 2004 Flann began working with The Princeton Review and rose to the level of Master Teacher/Tutor for the SAT, ACT, GRE, and other admission tests. He started working with UCSD Extension in 2011 and has since taught thousands of students, has created the syllabus for the Extension SAT courses an on-line SAT course, and has trained dozens of other SAT teachers.
Flann studied Romance languages at Palomar College and U.C. Santa Barbara but is largely an autodidact. He has a life-long love of learning that informs his approach to teaching. While running the Study Hall he discovered a knack for the SAT and other admission tests (GRE, GMAT, etc.) and has helped thousands of students overcome the daunting hurdle of these tests.
