General Physics I
PHYS-40026
Explore the Fundamentals of Physics Online: Motion, Forces, & Energy
This is the first course of a sequence of general physics courses designed to introduce students to the physical world. In this algebra- and trigonometry-based course, students will build a strong foundation in physics, including topics related to motion in one- and two-dimensions, forces, energy, momentum, rotation, and fluid flow. Designed for students pursuing studies in life sciences, health sciences, and degrees that do not require calculus, this course emphasizes problem-solving and real-world applications of physics.
Learning Objectives
- Describe and explain the motion of objects in one- and two-dimensions in terms of force and energy.
- Analyze collisions in terms of changes in momentum, force, and energy.
- Describe and explain the motion of spinning and rolling objects in equilibrium and non-equilibrium states
- Define concepts related to static and dynamic fluids
- Understand rotational motion and analyze torque and angular momentum.
- Develop problem-solving skills relevant to real-world physical systems
Course Topics
- Motion in one- and two-dimensions
- Forces and Newton's laws of motion
- Work and energy
- Momentum and collisions
- Rotational kinematics
- Fluids and fluid dynamics
Prerequisites
There are no required prerequisites. Recommended to have basic knowledge of linear relationships, exponents and polynomials, quadratic and polynomial functions, and geometry and trigonometry.
Format
This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines and deliverables to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate.
Course Developer
Transferring for College Credit
Credit earned in Extended Studies courses may lead to the award of a formal certificate by UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies or be applied toward an academic degree or professional credential, subject to the approval of the receiving institution(s).
Next Steps: Upon completion, consider enrolling in General Physics II for continued learning.
