Optimizing Academic Support Services for First-Time-to-College-Students

Community colleges are being asked to close the achievement and equity gap for historically marginalized communities. With the implementation of AB705 and AB1705, students are entering math, English, and their other classes with a wide range of skills and preparation. It is imperative that all students receive the necessary support to thrive. This class focuses on the importance of integrating academic supports to close equity gaps and improve student learning, retention, and success. Participants will learn about how a peer tutoring model functions as a culturally relevant instructional practice and the role peer tutoring plays in closing equity gaps. Instructors will work with tutors and the City College Tutoring Center staff to explore and develop best practices for embedding tutors in classrooms. Faculty will work within their own departments to support intentional and robust student interaction with tutors and the tutoring centers.
