Law and Ethics for Addiction Professionals

This course familiarizes students with both legal and ethical responsibilities associated with the practice of substance abuse disorder treatment. Students learn about appropriate roles and behavior to avoid liability and prevent harm to clients. Issues such as confidentiality, duty to treat, responsibility to third parties, ethical decision-making, and legal remedies for discrimination experienced by people in or in need of recovery from alcoholism and/or drug addiction are explored. This course meets the “legal and ethical responsibilities” provisions of all alcohol and drug counselor certification authorities in California.

Instructor: Dixie Schexnaildre

Dixie Schexnaildre
Professor Schexnaildre (she/her) holds a Doctor of Health Science degree (DHSc) and a Master’s degree in Complementary and Integrative Health (CIH) with a focus in Integrative Addiction Therapies, each from Drexel University’s College of Nursing and Health Professions (CNHP), plus a Graduate Certificate in Mind, Brain & Learning from Drexel University’s School of Education. She is a Registered Substance Use Disorder Counselor (SUDRC [CADTP]) in the State of California and holds an Advanced (500 hour + online instruction) yoga certification, full Y12SR (Yoga in the 12 Steps of Recovery) Certification, and TEFL (Teacher of English as a Foreign Language) credentials. Dr. Dixie has published with entities such as Nova Science Publishers; Creativity, Motivation, Neuroscience, AI and Their Future; and in The Journal of Interprofessional Education & Practice. She is currently collaborating with colleagues on two additional research projects and serves on an AI in Education Taskforce. Before her recent move to California, Dixie spent many years providing integrative services including auricular acupuncture as a NADA (National Acupuncture Detoxification Association) Acudetox Specialist (ADS) and has published a chapter on the use of Auricular Acupuncture to support smoking cessation (Carroll, 2021). Dr. Dixie is a proud GODA (Grandchild of [profoundly and culturally] Deaf Adults) and has worked for more than two decades as a professional American Sign Language (ASL)/English interpreter, primarily in education settings (EIPA >4. K-12). Her passions include inclusive access to education and holistic health services.
