Gain an Introduction to Clinical Hematology

 
This course will introduce the study and performance of clinical laboratory tests related to the enumeration and identification of the cellular elements of blood, primarily red blood cells, white blood cells, and platelets. In addition, it will present the clinical importance of the identification and reporting of blood cell abnormalities to assist physicians with patient hematological disease diagnosis. It will include an introduction to normal and abnormal coagulation or clotting.

Aligned with LFS (Laboratory Field Services) guidelines, the course is designed for those needing a hematology prerequisite for Clinical Laboratory Scientist programs or other pre-health science programs.
 

Prerequisites

 

This course assumes that students are familiar with college-level biology.

Format

 

This course is offered in an online asynchronous format.There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements.

Dr. Ana Dowey is the Education Coordinator of the San Diego CLS Training Program at UCSD Health Clinical Laboratory. She has been a Clinical Laboratory Scientist for 25 years. In addition, she holds a Master’s degree in Microbiology and a Doctorate in Education from UCSD.

As education coordinator of the CLS program she is in charge of instruction, management, and organization of the one-year training of CLS interns in the clinical laboratory. She taught Clinical Microbiology at the college level for 15 years and was the director of the Medical Laboratory Technician Training Program at San Diego Miramar College before coming to UCSD Health.
 
Among Ana’s passions are teaching, especially clinical laboratory sciences, and bringing science to elementary schools to motivate young children to like and enjoy science.
