High School: Water Clean-Up

Maintaining a clean drinking supply is key for preventing the spread of infectious diseases. Additionally, water is a source of minerals and other important nutrients. We will explore the ensurance of a healthy drinking water supply from the small scale of a camp up to the municipal level. Additional considerations will be placed on cross-national contaminants with the exploration of the Tijuana River Estuary and the development of antibiotic resistant strains of bacteria in the water supply.
What you'll learn
By the end of this course, students will be able to:
- Create a chlorine curve in Excel to illustrate bacterial die-off
- Identify the advantages and disadvantages of well-water and spring water
- Learn common contaminants that exist in water
- Recognize side-effects of common additives to clean water
- Create an alternative to current cleaning protocols
- Craft a public service announcement for consuming the most pristine water
