Employee and Labor Relations

Review the practical application of state and federal employment law. Topics include at-will employment and wrongful discharge; discrimination, harassment, and retaliation; ADA; employee rights and intellectual property; wage and hour benefits; occupational health, safety, and workers’ compensation; reductions-in-force; alternative dispute resolution; labor relations; and corrective action and terminations.
Learning Outcomes:
By the end of the course, students will:
1. Give you a “glance” at a broad “menu” of employment law concepts.
2. Develop a framework of key state and federal employment laws, including concepts, definitions, and benchmark cases.
3. Understand the practical application of the above in HR’s daily challenges.
4. Establish resources that can be consulted when real life situations call for such knowledge.
5. Practice situation analysis to prevent and solve legal problems in HR management.
6. Strengthen skills that allow HR to directly facilitate the accomplishment of business goals, while preventing liability, protecting corporate assets, and contributing to revenue growth.

Brenda S. Kasper is a founding member of Kasper & Frank LLP, a law firm representing California and multi-state employers for all of their human resources and employment law needs. She regularly advises employers of all sizes on wage and hour compliance, leaves of absence, disability accommodation, reductions in force, terminations and discipline management, employment contracts, personnel policies, and hiring issues. She also provides management and human resources training. Brenda is a former HR director so her legal advice is practical, creative and tailored to each client’s needs. She was the 2015 San Diego SHRM Board President, is an instructor for the HR Certification program at the University of California San Diego Extension and holds her SHRM-SCP and SPHR-California certifications.
