CT: Understanding Oncology

Concepts of cancer treatment and management will be communicated to the student through a series of web-based sessions, with a sharp focus on the terminology, pathology, diagnostics, disease management. Intended for individuals with educational backgrounds in biological sciences at the associates, bachelor or masters level. Nurses, research assistants, data managers and others who are involved in oncology research or would like to become involved in this area of research and development would benefit from this course. Included: an overview of cancer biology, diagnosis and specific types of cancer, as well as basic principles, treatment modalities and potential effect of those treatment modalities.

Catherine Glennon
Catherine Glennon, RN, MHS, NE-BC, OCN, is faculty and lecturer for nursing and allied health professions with several universities. She is a consultant in oncology in addition to a Quality Oncology Practice Initiative (QOPI) surveyor with the American Society of Clinical Oncologists (ASCO) and a research abstractor for Flatiron Health in New York.  Cath graduated with her bachelors and masters from Wichita State University in Wichita, Kansas. She was on the Board of Directors of the International Society of Nurses in Cancer Care (ISNCC), and presently serves on the Policy/Advocacy Committee. She has had multiple publications and presentations and is on the Editorial Board for the Asia-Pacific Journal of Cancer Nursing and on the board as an officer for both the Kansas City Oncology Nursing Society chapter and Sigma Theta Tau Delta chapter.  

Cath has been an oncology nurse since graduation from nursing school. She has served in clinical and administrative roles; the majority in nursing leadership in both inpatient and ambulatory settings at academic cancer centers such as Georgetown, Duke University and The University of Kansas as director of nursing. Her nursing expertise also lies in nursing certification with ANCC, ONCC and HPCC by serving on the national certification board of directors and contributing to exam development for several oncology related specialties.
