Architectural History of San Diego

San Diego offers many noteworthy examples of domestic, commercial, entertainment, industrial and roadside architecture, as well as designed landscapes. This course provides a historical overview of San Diego's built environment beginning with San Diego's Hispanic architectural heritage, through the Victorian and Revival periods, followed by Arts & Crafts-inspired styles, then into Modernism, Post-Modernism and the Contemporary and Neo-Revival styles.
Through lectures, assigned readings, walking tours and independent study projects, the philosophy and character-defining features of each style will be presented along with representative local examples.
