Annual giving includes contributions made annually to sustain a nonprofit’s community solutions and are the lifeblood of fundraising programs. A growing annual giving program is a team sport and culmination of thoughtfully executed communication, solicitation, and donor retention strategies.
During this course students learn fundamentals of annual giving including goal setting and campaign management, working with volunteers, crafting the case for support, stakeholder communication, and the evaluation and application of key solicitation techniques. Students learn to apply a range of principles, techniques, and tools to solve practical fundraising issues in annual giving.  

Learning Outcomes:
Upon completion of this course, students will be able to:

  • Understand the trends and various strategies for raising annual revenue for a nonprofit
  • Learn practical strategies for developing an annual giving program that moves an organization toward its strategic goals
  • Identify the appropriate activities for your plan, including special events, grants, government resources, corporate gifts, direct mail, on-line giving, social media, individual gifts, earned income and planned giving
  • Gain knowledge about corporate, foundation and government grants
  • Understand how to cultivate stronger relationships with annual donors
  • Analyze effective ways to use volunteers in annual development activities


Full participation in Annual Giving is applicable for 20 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.
