Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure II

Explore the complexities of English language structures and how and when they are used (pragmatics) in this TEFL certificate course.

You will learn how best to teach and integrate the practice of various highly specialized features of English grammar in all types of ESL and EFL lessons. Syntactic variations related to gender, age, socio-economics, and other factors will be examined.

Focus on the following structures:

  • noun phrase in detail, quantifiers, count and non-count distinctions and plurals: regular and irregular
  • adjectives and adjective clauses
  • modals and conditional clauses
  • clauses, conjunctions, and sentence parameters
  • collocations and cognates

Notes: A strong command of English is a prerequisite for this course. (iBT TOEFL:80, TOEIC:760) Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure I and Advanced Analysis of English Sentence Structure II do have to be taken in any particular order.

Instructor: Elizabeth Bredeck

Elizabeth Bredeck

Elizabeth Bredeck has been an instructor at the UC San Diego English Language Institute since 2012. Prior to that she was a member of the UC San Diego Literature Department for 13 years, designing and teaching courses in German language, literature, and culture. She supervised graduate teaching assistants, and was a reader for the AP German language exam. Her publications include a book on the language philosopher Fritz Mauthner (1992). 

She joined UC San Diego's English Language Institute after earning her TEFL certificate and teaching English at the university in Goettingen, Germany. Partial to courses with an academic focus, she especially enjoys teaching grammar and reading. A member of CATESOL, she is also a freelance translator, most recently of The Jewish Body. A History by Robert Juette.
