Teaching and Learning Online (TLO)

As an entry point course in the Instructional Design Certificate, Teaching and Learning Online covers the many aspects of design and instruction in online spaces. The differences between synchronous and asynchronous learning and how to leverage each format effectively will be introduced. This course will present techniques for successful online course delivery using a combination of pedagogical principles, technical proficiencies, and an understanding of the unique aspects of online education.

Specific areas of focus include: the historical and foundational aspects of teaching online, learning management systems (LMS), ADDIE, Universal Design for Learning (UDL), backward design, ChatGPT, and issues in online learning. In this course, you will delve into accessibility and usability best practices. The principles of effective online teaching, such as the importance of clear communication, active engagement, and building a sense of community, will also be covered.
