Explore Earth's wonders, from landforms to geo-hazards, fostering curiosity and awareness.
Discover the major landforms in America and all around the world while exploring the theory of plate tectonics and how they move around the surface of the Earth to create landforms. Students will learn how to read topological maps and how geological events affect environments and the way humans live. In addition, students will investigate the concept of evolution, geologic time scales, mass extinctions and through a case study, see how human activities are impactful in changing the nature around us. Dive into the phenomenon of major geo-hazards, including earthquakes, volcanoes and tsunamis, and with better understanding of the Earth, how we can monitor and prepare to suffer less and sustain more.
What You Will Learn
Students in Middle School: Understanding Earth will:
- Review the major natural features that surround humans through a geological explanation
- Become aware of Earth Sciences and the millions of unresolved mysteries of nature
- Interpret date and develop solutions to problems within a working group
- Become curious about Earth

Carter, Sasha, BS in Earth Science, PhD in Geological Science
Dr. Sasha Peter Carter (he/his/him) joined Sally Ride Science Junior Academy in 2016 to create the kinds of science classes he always wished existed – classes that emphasize direct, hands-on interactions with physical science phenomena; classes that get students doing science in the first 15 minutes; classes that foster a collaborative learning community; classes that put students in the driver's seat and give them ownership over their discoveries. His Junior Academy instruction began with Messy Science in 2016 and now includes five different workshops. Sasha brings to the classroom eight years of post-doctoral research in Antarctic water systems and more than five years of teaching students of all ages. When he's not working for Sally Ride Science, he’s teaching Ea...Read More
