Explore the basic concepts of intellectual property. The nuts and bolts of patents, trademarks, copyrights and trade secrets are explained in layman's terms. Real-life examples and "war stories" are interwoven to clarify and emphasize the hot intellectual property issues that can make or break a company's financial health.

Course Format

This is an entirely online asynchronous web-based course that is to be completed between the published course start and end dates. Although there are no required course meetings to attend, this course does have specific assignment due dates and deadlines.
UCSD Extended Studies operates in Pacific Standard Time and therefore all course deadlines are held to Pacific Standard Time (PST).

Instructor: Taneashia Morrell

Taneashia Morrell
Taneashia Morrell is an Assistant Chief Counsel. Previously, she was a Senior Contracts & Licensing Associate at the Salk Institute, where she negotiated and managed contracts, licensing agreements, trademarks, and other intellectual property matters. Prior to Salk, Taneashia was a Staff Attorney at the Legal Services of South Central Michigan, where her primary focuses were Family Law and Civil Litigation. Prior to becoming a Staff Attorney, she was a Judicial Law Clerk to the Hons. Rosemarie Aquilina and Hugh B. Clarke Jr., at the 30th Circuit Court and the 54-A District Court, respectively.

Taneashia earned her LLM in Intellectual Property from Michigan State University and her JD (cum laude) in Litigation from Western Michigan University. She is currently a Board of Director for the San Diego County Bar Association, an Advisor for the Unauthorized Practice of Law for the Michigan State Bar, and a member of Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Inc.

Taneashia is admitted to practice in the State Bar of Michigan, the District of Columbia Bar, and before the U.S. Supreme Court.
