Learn From Experts’ Best Practices and Lessons Learned From Years of Implementing the IGP
This intensive 2-day workshop provides the comprehensive training needed to achieve and maintain stormwater compliance at industrial facilities. The course fee includes materials, instruction by CASQA certified Trainers of Record (ToRs), lunch, refreshments, a field trip to the Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma (on Day 1), and a Certificate of Completion.
Day One: Stormwater Fundamentals, 8:30am - 4:30pm
Orientation to the Industrial Storm Water General Permit (IGP) 2014-0057-DWQ. Gain an introduction to stormwater management under California's Industrial Stormwater Permit. Learn how the Permit applies to you and strategies businesses can implement to minimize permit impact. During day one, participants will receive hands-on training focused on:
- Covered Facilities and Applying for a NOI/NEC/NONA
- Understanding your Receiving Waters, HUC-10, Discharge Prohibitions, TMDLs and Amendments to the Permit
- Pollutant Sources Assessment and Examples
- Preparing Compliant SWPPPs
- Legal Perspectives & Enforcement Actions
Participants will attend a field trip to the Nimitz Marine Facility in Point Loma and work through sampling and monitoring exercises. Transportation provided during the second half of the day.
Day Two: Advanced Topics, 8:30am - 4:00pm
The advanced workshop is tailored to students who have attended the orientation seminar or who have a basic understanding of the IGP. Day 2 will focus on:
- Numeric Action Levels (NALs) and Numeric Effluent Limitations (NELs)
- Common Sample Selection, Collection, and Reporting Issues
- Sampling Selection and Collection Techniques
- Minimum and Advanced BMPs
- NALs Exceedances & Level Exceedance Response Action (ERA) Plans
- Level 2 ERA Action Plans and Technical Reports
- SB205 - Business Licences Requirements
- CII Permit and Emerging Contaminants

This learning experience is intentionally designed as a combination of in-class and web-based instruction. In-class meetings follow the published schedule. Students are also expected to engage with course content online during the published course dates.
Gardiner, Nancy
Nancy has over 25 years of consulting experience in water quality and water resource projects. She is a specialist in stormwater management, with experience in all facets of stormwater compliance for industrial, municipal, construction, and transportation clients. Nancy is a specialist in erosion and sediment control and has assited clients with controlling discharges from construction sites and other disturbed land surfaces.
Nancy holds and AB in Geology from Smith College and an MS in Hydrogeology from the University of Wisconsin, Madison. Nancy is an IGP trainer of Record and a QISP.
