Gain a comprehensive understanding of the grants process and how you can use grants to fund your endeavors. This hands-on course will guide you through the entire process of writing a funding proposal. Practice writing problem statements and objectives; receive feedback on your writing; work effectively in group discussions; and learn how to construct a grant budget. Topics include “big-picture” program design; the research process for finding the right grant funders for a project; components of an effective grant proposal; and strategies for organizing the complete package. Discover the resources you need to help your organization with its own grant writing.

Learning Objectives:
By the end of the course, students will:
- Be able to write effectively for multiple purposes and audiences required by a nonprofit organization (NPO)
- Comprehend the entire grant proposal writing process, including project/program management, financial projections and program evaluation
- Identify roles and expectations of a funding agency, foundation or giving institution
- Understand very basic NPO management systems and constraints
- Develop effective research strategies, data collection, and invention
- Understand basic principles of layout and visual communication design for proposals
Full participation in Grant Writing for Nonprofits is applicable for 20 points in Category 1.B – Education of the CFRE International application for initial certification and/or recertification.

Instructor: David Pierce
Experienced Fundraising Professional
David Pierce has more than 40 years of experience in fundraising and nonprofit management. He served as an Executive Director of the San Diego Human Dignity Foundation for a number of years, administering the foundation’s grant making programs. He has also served as Development Director for the La Jolla Music Society and the local chapter of the American Civil Liberties Union. In his various fundraising positions, he has worked on Grant Writing, Direct Mail, Major Gifts, Research, Donor Acknowledgment, and Capital Campaigns. He also has extensive experience in grants management and reporting.
David has also volunteered on the Board of Directors of the local Association of Fundraising Professionals and the San Diego Gay Men’s Chorus. In his years with the Chorus, David was elected President, Vice-President, and Director of Development. He has also volunteered for the San Diego Museum Council, which is a membership organization of more than 50 nonprofit museums in San Diego County.
He has been an instructor for UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies’ Fundraising and Development Certificate program for more than 20 years, having taught Grant Writing, Major Gifts and Capital Campaigns.
