Futures: Intermediate Robotics with JavaScript

CSE-90105

Learn to program robots while learning the popular JavaScript language in order to prepare for the careers of the future.

We will start with a review of JavaScript, robotics, and DDE, and then explore the challenges of programming in the real world. Students will use the popular coding language JavaScript to write programs to make robots interact with the world in meaningful ways. Students will use OpenJSCAD to design and (optionally) print parts for robots. Students may also gain practical experience with hands-on activities including programming an Arduino compatible bot (materials fee). This class builds on the foundational skills acquired in Introduction to Robotics with JavaScript.

What You Will Learn

Students in Futures: Intermediate Robotics with JavaScript will:

  • Prepare for future advances in robotics which may affect the economy and employment
  • Learn how to use the Arduino IDE to reprogram the cardboard bot from the previous course
  • Learn about robot positioning including forward and reverse kinematics
  • Get an introduction to 3D modeling with JavaScript using OpenJSCAD
  • Understand the implications of AI and concerns about its safety

Instructor: Laura Ruival

Laura Ruival
Laura Ruival is a software engineer with 15 years of software development experience. Since graduating from UCSD she has continued to learn everything she can about coding while pursuing a career as a software engineer. In 2018 Laura began teaching coding and robotics for Alpine Education Foundation, a non-profit organization that brings STEAM subjects to elementary schools in the Alpine Union School District. She is also an instructor for the UCSD Extended Studies Futures program which brings computer science courses to high school students. She also teaches coding camps for Sally Ride Science Academy including Scratch programming for elementary students. Laura is eager to pass on her knowledge and experience in the software industry and make coding accessible to every child.

Instructor: James Newton

James Newton
James Newton is a professional embedded-systems engineer specializing in robotics and data logging. Although James is self-taught and holds no degrees, his communications and collaborative skills have always led to meaningful employment and association. James’ deep love of making and teaching led him to join a small volunteer group that brought Maker Faires to San Diego starting in 2013. This Makers Guild has continued to provide James with an outlet for volunteer work, activities and events geared toward teaching people of all ages the technical skills required to make interesting things. James started with UC San Diego Extension in 2018 by teaching an introductory course for the Program Your Future program. He hopes to continue similar activities as time allows.
