Course Description:
Exercise physiology, the study of human physical performance, draws its research base from applied exercise physiology, sports medicine, metabolism, and nutrition. This course provides the foundational information essential to a thorough understanding of the effects of exercise on human physiology in the field of Sports Medicine and Exercise Science.
The course is intended for anyone interested in learning the general principles of exercise physiology and developing skills to apply this knowledge in real-world settings. Many who take this course are fitness instructors, medical students, physical therapists, personal trainers, strength & conditioning specialists, coaches, athletic trainers, and others in the field of sports medicine and exercise science.
The goal of this course is to explore the fundamentals of exercise, the impact of exercise training on performance and health, and the significance of sports-related nutrition/fueling for sport. This course has an overall emphasis on the roles of the body systems, with exposure to the cardiovascular, respiratory, endocrine, nervous, and musculoskeletal systems during exercise.

Ken Vitale is a professor in the Department of Orthopedic Surgery at UCSD School of Medicine. He completed his PM&R residency at NYU Langone Medical Center and the Rusk Institute of Rehabilitation Medicine. He received his medical degree from NYU School of Medicine and graduated summa cum laude in Biology from Rutgers University.
Dr. Vitale enjoys all aspects of exercise physiology and sports medicine. When living in New York he was a medical volunteer for the NYC Marathon and worked as a medical provider for baseball tournaments and regional triathlons. At UCSD he works for the O...Read More
