This course will recapitulate and reinforce coding concepts previously learned in order to prepare students for entry into the medical coding industry and to take a national credentialing exam.

By the end of this course, the student will be able to:

•  Accurately and efficiently code many record types including Inpatient, Outpatient, Physician, Emergency Room, Long Term Care, and Home Health    

•   Understand diagnostic groupings 

•   Apply official coding guidelines and reporting requirements 

•   Calculate and analyze case mix     

•   Identify the steps needed to be eligible for, effectively prepare for, and access the national credentialing exams (CCS, CCA, CPC, COC)

•   Identify the format, restrictions, and policies of the credentialing exams including scoring, retakes, allowed resources, and time limits

•   Understand basic billing and denial management objectives

•   Prepared a resume and started your professional networking

Note: Students do not need the latest textbook versions for class but should have within last 2 years. The instructor will provide them the links for the current ICD-10-CM and PCS codes but there is not free inline access for CPT. Students will need the current books when taking their Credentialing exams. 

The course is intended for students who have completed all of the Medical Coding Program courses including Medical Terminology, Intro to Coding, Anatomy & Physiology, ICD-10-CM, Pathophysiology of Human Disease, Reimbursement Methodologies & Compliance, ICD-10-PCS, Pharmacology, Legal & Ethical Issues in Coding, and CPT/HCPCS Coding.  

Prerequisites: *At minimum, students should have the following courses completed: MEDC-40018 ICD-10-CM, MEDC-40020 CPT/HCPCS, MEDC-40019 ICD-10-PCS. Student must have completed these courses prior to enrolling in the Coding Practicum.
