Animation I: Introduction to Disney's 12 Principles of Animation

Using the simplicity of basic 2D animation, students will become familiar with Disney’s "12-Principles of Animation." Whether 2D, CG, or stop motion animation, these principles are the backbone for all character animation projects. Students will learn to use Key Pose Animation, Squash and Stretch, Anticipation, Staging, Lines-of-Action, and more to create several short animation projects and a final 10-15 second film.

What You Will Learn:

  • How to apply traditional animation processes to 2D animation projects.

  • Integrate pose-to-pose keyframing, squash & stretch, anticipation, staging, and arcs into 2D animation projects.

  • An understanding of shapes, weight, depth, balance and appeal in 2D animation projects.

  • How to develop an animation that utilizes cycles.

  • A thorough understanding of Timing, Spacing, and Lines-of-Action in animation.

  • How to analyze real world observations and apply them to animation.

  • Be able to research from life, read and prepare Exposure Sheets to document the animation action, all while demonstrating critical thinking skills.

  • How to critique and discuss animation projects.

Prerequisite:  Basic drawing and computer skills (Mac or Windows). 
Note: Elective course for Art and the Creative Process professional certificate. 

Materials: Students must have a scanner for scanning pencil drawings or a Wacom tablet with a drawing program that can save JPEGs or PNGs. Basic movie-making software is free. Please see 'Related Documents' on the right sidebar of this page for the full materials list.

Eric Vanhamersveld, BFA

Worked for over 30 years in the entertainment industry as an animator with Warner Bros., Walt Disney, J. Ward Productions and Hanna-Barbera studios

Eric Van Hamersveld teaches Animation I: Introduction to Disney's 12 Principles of Animation for the Professional Certificate in Art and the Creative Process.

Eric has a BFA degree TV and film production from Texas Christian University. For over 30 years he has been involved in all creative, technical and business phases of the entertainment industry. He has worked as an animator for Warner Bros. Studios, J. Ward Productions and Hanna-Barbera Studios. His credits include: "The Pink Panther," "Road Runner," "Speedy Gonzalez," "George of the Jungle"; numerous TV series and several commercials including "Capt'n Crunch" and "Star Kist-Charlie The Tuna." He also worked for the Walt Disney Company as an imagineer producing visual special effects for EPCOT, Disneyland and Tokyo Disneyland theme park projects.

Van Hamersveld has created children's games and direct-to-videos for Mattel Toys, Fisher-Price Toys, McGraw/Hill Publishers and illustrated several children’s books. He is also an author of two books, "Roy Rogers & Dale Evans: It Was Always the Music" and "Guide to Practical Holography." Currently he is working as an animator and animation director on several TV commercials and two feature film development projects.

He spent 10 years teaching animation at the Art Institute of California and is currently a senior animation instructor for both UC San Diego Extension and the John Paul the Great University. He also conducts intensive video production workshops for the Ronald Reagan Presidential Library and is a member of the International Animation Film Society Educators Forum.
