This class will help English language learners understand and use the most common and colorful expressions in everyday English -- idioms and slang. Various materials will be used to study the idioms, including popular music, cartoons, and advertisements. Students will also be asked to bring in idioms they have encountered outside of class. This is a fun way for non-native English speakers to increase vocabulary while improving listening and speaking abilities. Students will study approximately 80 idiomatic and slang expressions throughout the course.
IMPORTANT: Students must have an advanced-level English language level to take this course. Students will be required to take an English language proficiency exam before the course begins. This exam is required and is no additional cost. For exam details, click on the course information below. For questions, please contact esl@ucsd.edu.
