Bio
Jennifer Marie Powers is a Ph.D. and experienced teacher of diverse subject matter and student body, more recently science at the pre-college level. She was educated at top-rated Kenyon College, where she earned an B.A. in English and Foreign Languages (French and Spanish), and in nationally-ranking departments of the University of Texas at Austin (UT-Austin), from where she holds a Ph.D. in Romance Languages in Cultural Context (literature, history, and religious studies). Dr. Powers has taught for nearly a decade at the college level—at UT-Austin in Departments of Spanish and of French and Italian and, notably, at UC-San Diego in Linguistics and Literature Departments. For the past four years, she has served as a homeschooling mother / teacher of her elementary-aged child, whose curriculum has been science centered. In this time, she has also gained experience teaching science in extra-curricular programs, such as STEAM Youth Education at the San Diego Fleet Science Center. At Sally Ride Science, her preparation and approach are unique, especially in looking at science more broadly through its history, in connecting large concepts and ideas for hands-on science, and in integrating reading and writing skills for all levels in the classroom.
