Timothy Palmer is an instructor at UCSD's English Language Institute. Throughout the last four years, he has taught in Germany, Switzerland, and California. In his international teaching experience, Timothy has come to understand that communication is greatly influenced by interlanguage and intercultural transfer, and he has designed his teaching approach based on highlighting these issues. He has experience teaching English for a variety of purposes and contexts, including business, academia, and travel. Having taught English language learners of all ages and proficiency levels, Timothy understands that each student has unique language needs and goals. In order to provide the best learning environment, he tailors his instruction based on each student's language needs. His student-centered approach to language teaching is built upon current research in the fields of applied linguistics and second language acquisition. Timothy is currently researching native speaker measures of spoken and written fluency and how this information can contribute to increasing fluency in English language learners. He is currently developing methods for student-driven language analysis using a combination of corpus linguistics and discourse analysis to discover native patterns of language use across different genres and purposes for English.
