Bio

Joe Godfrey is an Emmy Award-winning composer, musician, and educator with over three decades of experience in the audio industry. At UC San Diego's Division of Extended Studies, Joe teaches courses in video and audio production, including Scoring and Sound Design, where he shares his deep expertise in crafting impactful soundscapes for film, television, and advertising.

Joe’s creative journey extends beyond music into aviation and writing. An accomplished pilot and aviation enthusiast, he began writing about aviation in the 1990s, publishing articles and a popular interview series called Profiles for AVweb, featuring lesser-known pilots with fascinating stories. His work in aviation writing parallels his music career, blending storytelling and technical precision to create engaging and insightful content.

Joe’s career in sound design spans award-winning projects, including Touch, for which he won the 2023 San Diego Film Award for Best Sound Design. His work often involves balancing dialogue, music, and sound effects to elevate narratives, such as the tension-filled scenes of Touch or the heartfelt moments of Eric Addison’s 2017 short film. With a Master of Education (M.Ed.), Joe combines his industry knowledge with his passion for teaching, preparing the next generation of creators to excel in video and audio production.
