Cultural Competence in SUD Counseling

Build awareness, knowledge, and skills needed to deliver culturally responsive care in substance use counseling. This course explores the principles of cultural competence—diversity, responsiveness, and humility—and their vital role in supporting recovery across diverse communities. Through reflection and real-world application, learners will deepen their understanding of intersectionality and lifelong learning to provide effective, sensitive treatment for clients from all cultural backgrounds.

Notes: Required for ASCEND training program. This 0.5-unit course satisfies 5 hours toward the completion of the 80-hour core competency education requirement for first-year SUD counselor registrants.
