General Chemistry I with Lab

CHEM-40007

Gain an Introduction General Chemistry

This course covers introductory concepts that will be important to future studies. Topics include atomic and molecular structure, chemical bonding, basic reactions, stoichiometry, and states of matter. Problem-solving is an important part of this course. This course is designed for biology, premedical, prenursing, preclinical and prehealth students.

Learning Objectives

  • Gain an understanding of the global connections between chemical cycles and human activities
  • Know how chemical theories are applied to understand and model global processes
  • Understand how global relations affect the flow of chemical systems in the environment inways that impact your life and the lives of others
  • Explain how chemistry impacts human life

Format

This course is offered in an online asynchronous format. There are no set meeting times, however, students follow a weekly schedule and there will be deadlines to meet in terms of course requirements. This course cannot be completed at an accelerated rate.

Transferring for College Credit

Many courses at UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies may be eligible for college credit at UC San Diego or other institutions. Credit transfer is determined by the receiving institution. We recommend consulting with the registrar's office at your intended institution before enrolling to confirm how your courses will transfer.

About the Lab Component

This course includes a hands on laboratory involving multi-day experiments that the student performs at home.  Except for a few household items, all the materials are included in the lab kit that students must purchase separately from HOL Sciences.

To purchase your lab kit, please use the link provided in the section note.
Please note that due to COVID-19, HOL is experiencing a longer than normal time in processing orders.  We recommend you order your kits at least three weeks before the course begins.
