Best Methods in Teaching Speaking Skills

Learn the best methods for getting ESL and EFL students to speak English and which tasks encourage meaningful interaction.

This course will address types and idiosyncrasies of the spoken language as well as micro skills of speaking that are factors in the oral code.

Review current issues in teaching oral communication by analyzing:

  • conversational discourse

  • pronunciation

  • affective factors

This course will suggest fluency and accuracy activities that can be used in and out of the classroom.


Learn factors that hamper improved speaking skills for ESL and ESL learners including:

  • specific contexts

  • performable variables

  • colloquial language

  • pronunciation factors

  • interaction

Christina Andrade, M.Ed., TESOL

9 years of ESL teaching experience and ESL Instructor at ELI. Presenter for CATESOL.

Christina Andrade, M.Ed., is a California-born educator who has taught English as a second language around the world. She is also a passionate action researcher dedicated to the constant learning that comes from the teaching process. Christina graduated with highest honors from the University of California, Santa Barbara in 2003. Following the completion of her Bachelors in Communication, she earned her CELTA teaching certificate from Cambridge and taught in Australia. After years of living and teaching abroad, from Micronesia to Australia, she moved to San Diego to continue her education with a Master’s of Education in TESOL, Culture and Literacy from the University of San Diego, where she received the School of Leadership and Education Award of Distinction. Christina loves to share her passion for teaching as a teacher-trainer in the UCSD Extension TEFL program and the TESOL program at the University of San Diego. Christina created the curriculum for the University of San Diego’s TEFL Certificate program and also instructs full-time at UCSD’s English Language Institute.

Instructor: Andreea Corona

Andreea Corona
Andreea Corona currently serves as a Continuing Lecturer in the Linguistics Department in the English for Multilingual Students (EMS) Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she teaches multiple levels of academic reading and writing courses for international undergraduate and graduate students. In her fifteen years of teaching thus far, she has taught a variety of academic courses in intensive language programs such as at the University of San Diego, where she also received her Master’s in Education in TESOL, Literacy, and Culture, as well as several composition courses at community colleges throughout the San Diego area. She has also taught internationally in Italy, Mexico, Romania, and Turkey, where she served as an English Language Fellow for the U.S. Department of State and taught teacher education courses. For the past twelve years, she has developed instructional content for the online TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate Program for the University of San Diego, serving both as a Subject Matter Expert and online instructor for courses such as Methods of Teaching ESL, Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and Engaging in the Foreign/Second Language Classroom. Her primary research interests include higher education writing and teacher education and professional development.
