Best Methods in Teaching Pronunciation and Fluency

Features of English phonetics, phonology, stress, and intonation will be drawn on to enrich instruction in best practices for teaching and learning pronunciation in a TEFL environment.

Going beyond discrete sounds, this course will focus on the suprasegmental aspects of English pronunciation for both formal and informal situations such as:

  • stress

  • rhythm

  • pitch

  • intonation patterns

Specific techniques for accent reduction, plus important information on body language for clear communication in English, will be presented. Lastly, the course will emphasize the integration of pronunication instruction and practice in all types of lessons.

Faeren Adams
Faeren Adams has been an instructor with UC San Diego Department of Extended Studies (DES) since 2010. She holds a BA in English Literature and a MATESOL (Master of Arts in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages). She also has a professional certificate in teaching online from DES. She has taught English in Ecuador and South Korea. The core of her approach is helping students analyze their own language skills for their personal language challenges. She believes that everyone can benefit from learning how to learn better and so she incorporates research-based methodologies that help students learn more effectively. She has taught all skill areas at all skill levels for more than 2 decades.

Instructor: Andreea Corona

Andreea Corona
Andreea Corona currently serves as a Continuing Lecturer in the Linguistics Department in the English for Multilingual Students (EMS) Program at the University of California, Santa Barbara, where she teaches multiple levels of academic reading and writing courses for international undergraduate and graduate students. In her fifteen years of teaching thus far, she has taught a variety of academic courses in intensive language programs such as at the University of San Diego, where she also received her Master’s in Education in TESOL, Literacy, and Culture, as well as several composition courses at community colleges throughout the San Diego area. She has also taught internationally in Italy, Mexico, Romania, and Turkey, where she served as an English Language Fellow for the U.S. Department of State and taught teacher education courses. For the past twelve years, she has developed instructional content for the online TESOL (Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages) Certificate Program for the University of San Diego, serving both as a Subject Matter Expert and online instructor for courses such as Methods of Teaching ESL, Linguistics for Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages, and Engaging in the Foreign/Second Language Classroom. Her primary research interests include higher education writing and teacher education and professional development.
