Use the 5Es to Design Effective STEM Lessons and Support Student Learning
Teaching STEM Using the 5Es provides participants the opportunity to learn how to and design effective STEM lessons using the 5E instructional model. This model, developed by the Biological Sciences Curriculum Study (BSCS), divides each lesson five segments – Engage, Explore, Explain, Elaborate, and Evaluate. Participants will learn that this approach is based on research showing that students learn more readily when they – not the teacher – are the ones assessing their existing understanding and doing the work required to improve that understanding. In addition, participants will learn how 5E lessons make learning more engaging by embedding the stories of women and men from diverse background doing exciting work in STEM fields.
What You Will Learn
Students in Teaching STEM Using the 5Es will:
- Implement the structure of a 5E lesson
- Experience a lesson based on the 5E Instructional Model
- Study the research underlying the 5E approach to science instruction
- Understand the roles of the teacher and the student throughout the 5E Instructional Model
- Know how to embed career awareness throughout a 5E lesson
