Elizabeth A Kelley
MA Applied Linguistics

Liz Kelley has been an EFL instructor in intensive English programs (IEP) and college courses in San Diego since 1994.  Liz has taught a variety of courses and levels at San Diego State (linguistics and writing), San Diego City College (credit bearing ESL), and UCSD Extension’s English Language Institute (ELI).  At the ELI, Liz teaches primarily advanced level courses in academic skills, grammar, pronunciation and fluency, test-preparation, and writing.  Liz’s ELI work also includes mentoring and observing instructors new to the ELI, and providing in-house professional development seminars for other TEFL teachers.   Upon the completion of her MA in Applied Linguistics from SDSU in 2000, Liz began teaching TEFL courses for UCSD Extension in 2000.  Liz’s TEFL specializations include culture in the language classroom, grammar, and pronunciation and fluency.  Liz recently returned to the UCSD Extension’s TEFL program after leaving in 2008 to complete the coursework for a teaching and learning focused Ed.D. at UCSD. Liz has chosen not to complete the dissertation portion of the Ed. D. degree as the coursework and research project aspects of the program have met her professional development needs. Liz’s research interests are ESL task design as it relates to student-talk in the classroom, and EFL teachers’ understanding of their work through the lens of cultural schema theory.
