This course introduces students to a variety of prominent 20th century Latin American films in their original language. Students will have an opportunity to engage directly these visual texts without the mediation of translation, allowing them to gain appreciation of Latin American cinema that is at times difficult through the intercession of translation. Through these films, we will both critically analyze historical developments in Latin America as well as the assumptions and biases which go into the making of a film on Latin America. Through this process, we will develop a deeper appreciation for the complexities which embody Latin American and the problems which the region faces. Course Materials and Textbooks: Netflix and Amazon Prime subscriptions.
