Coral Survey Science I

This is the first course in the Maldives Blue Prosperity Training Program. This course will introduce the motivations behind several marine assessment surveys, discuss considerations for logistical and safety planning of field expeditions, highlight considerations related to the resolution and future use of data collected, and cover methods for appropriate data entry, management, and organization. Existing protocols (National Coral Reef Monitoring Framework and 100 Island Challenge) will be used as case studies to demonstrate the various outcomes that can be achieved with different sampling methods. Students will learn theoretical and practical skills for the successful design, implementation, and execution of marine field surveys, and gain a strong understanding of the goals, utility, and limitations of each field method.

The course is intended for scientists with some experience in underwater survey methods.

Grading Options

Students have the option to choose how they want their course(s) graded. Students interested in earning a Certificate of Achievement for this course and/or a Certificate of Completion upon completion of all five courses, please select either the Letter Grade or Pass/No Pass option at the time of enrollment.
