Featured Speaker: Professor Gallya Lahav
International migration is one of the most salient issues on the political agenda in the United States and Europe today. This lecture will review some conceptual confusions about numbers and types of migrant flows in the United States, with some comparisons to countries in Europe. It will review some major differences between concepts such as walls, fences, and border security; immigrants, foreigners, refugees, and climate migrants; legalization versus amnesty; citizenship and nationality, assimilation and multicultural integration. It will conclude with some major misconceptions about migration trends and offer correctives that enhance literacy on the subject.
Gallya Lahav is Associate Professor of Political Science at Stony Brook University. She writes about and teaches international migration and European integration. Lahav holds graduate degrees from the London School of Economics and the Graduate Center, City University of New York.
