Genetic Counseling Assistant (GCA) Program

This online two-course program is designed to provide students with the knowledge and skills necessary to support genetic counselors in delivering high-quality genetic counseling services. The program covers a wide range of topics, including genetic and medical terminology, genetics and genomics, ethical and legal issues, and counseling techniques.  Students are required to start the program with BIOL40359 - Genetic Counseling as it is a prerequisite for BIOL40375 - Genetic Counseling Assistant Training

Through a combination of lecture-style classes and real-world clinical experiences, students will learn how to:

  • Collect and organize patient medical and family history information.
  • Administer and interpret genetic tests.
  • Prepare and maintain patient records and documentation.
  • Provide patient education and support, including providing resources and referrals.
  • Participate in genetic counseling sessions, taking notes and providing support to the patient and family.
  • Maintain accurate and up-to-date knowledge of genetic conditions and the latest treatments and technologies.

The program is designed for individuals who are interested in a career in healthcare and have a passion for helping people understand the complex issues related to genetic conditions. Graduates of the program will be prepared to work as Genetic Counseling Assistants, providing vital support to patients, families, and healthcare professionals in the field of genetic counseling. Upon successful completion of the two training courses, participants will receive a Certificate of Achievement.
