Tiffany Marie Hardy loves grammar. She also enjoys the glamour of television and film production.
The winner of UC San Diego Extension’s quarterly $5,500 Bridge to Employment Scholarship, Hardy will be better able to pursue her career goals at a rapid pace.
The goal of the scholarship is to honor a recent college graduate who wishes to add skills to their resume — or shift to a new career — by enrolling in one of the more than 100 professional certificate programs.
Hardy intends to earn a Professional Certificate in Copyediting.
“I’m interested in eventually doing production in Hollywood,” she said, “and I’m also very passionate about my writing.”
Now, as a director and contributing digital reporter at U-T San Diego, the daily newspaper’s digital platform, Hardy has her career on the fast track.
“I’m so grateful to have this opportunity,” she said. “Winning this scholarship will definitely help me reach my goals.”
Originally from the Bay Area, Hardy came to San Diego to attend San Diego State University, where she graduated in 2012 with a degree in television/film and news media, emphasis on critical studies.
Nearly two years ago, she was hired at U-T San Diego as a first-time floor director for the newspaper’s 24-hour TV station, which closed earlier this year.
“When I think about it, I’ve made so much progress and learned so much, I can’t believe it,” she said. “Today, I know every position in the studio, mainly because I try to be open to learning everything I can. I feel it’s a great accomplishment to be where I am.”
When she told her father about the scholarship, he told her he was pleased – but not surprised.
“She said, ‘That sounds like the Tiffany I know,’ ” she said. “He’s a retired journalist, so he’s always taught me to use the language correctly. It’s part of who I am.”
