Featured Speaker: Professor David Shirk
This talk will focus on the relationship between the United States and Mexico, two countries that were once described as “distant neighbors” and today have become increasingly intertwined. The discussion will address the major areas of mutual interest and concern — trade, security, and migration — and the internal and global disruptions that have affected the way that both countries have approached their relationship in recent decades.
David A. Shirk is the chair of the Department of Political Science and International Relations at the University of San Diego. He received his PhD in Political Science from UC San Diego and conducts research on Mexican politics, U.S.-Mexican relations, and law enforcement and security along the U.S.-Mexico border. Shirk has delivered testimony to both houses of the U.S. Congress and is author and editor of several books dealing with Mexican crime and politics.
