UC San Diego Division of Extended Studies is redefining the role of a research university

A catalyst for economic, intellectual, and cultural growth

Our mission is to inspire learning throughout the lifespan and help our community develop the skills to thrive in a global society. As the world becomes increasingly interconnected, Extension stands as a beacon of guidance. We foster connection through education, and as such must keep pace with the needs of an ever-changing economy. Meticulous research drives our innovative program offerings and events, which are all crafted with community in mind. Institutional research via data analysis provides insight on economic trends and workforce projections, and allows us to shape our talent development and continuing education coursework to align with current market needs. Recently, Extension delved into the dynamics of the gig economy and found that the experiences, needs, and demographics of independent contractors, ride-share drivers, online sellers, and others outside of the regular workforce vary greatly by region.

Research is at Extension's core

Demographic and economic studies were decisive factors in choosing the East Village as the location for UC San Diego Urban. As shown in a recent study, downtown San Diego—already home to many startups and cutting- edge companies—has the potential to become not only a regional driver of growth, but a mecca for creative millennial talent, the next wave of the national innovation economy. UC San Diego Urban will be a magnet for innovation, bringing even more exciting opportunities to downtown.

Extension understands that changing demographics and advancing technology fuel economic growth. The tech industry is transformative. Many modern jobs, including those considered part of the gig economy, wouldn’t be possible without it. Here in San Diego, manufacturing and other postwar industries are on the decline, giving rise to a knowledge economy. Economy and workforce go hand in hand, so our efforts to keep local workers adept in market needs is more relevant than ever.
