A decade after a series of political movements collectively known as the Arab Spring, many Middle Eastern countries appear to be in more dire economic straits and have less political freedom. This talk will explore economic and political development across the Middle East over the past decade and assess to what extent any improvements or deteriorations in economic and political conditions can be attributed to the events of the Arab Spring.
Presenter Biography
Hisham Foad, PhD, is Associate Professor and chair of the economics department at San Diego State University. He is also a core member of the Center for Islamic and Arabic Studies at SDSU and a former board member of the Middle East Economic Association. His research focuses on the economic significance of national borders, with a particular focus on migrant networks. He teaches a wide range of courses including the economics of the Middle East, the economics of immigration, and development economics.
