James M Scofield
M.A.


James Scofield has been a teacher and administrator in ESL programs for over 45 years. He taught ESL in intensive English programs at The Applied English Center at the University of Kansas, Systran (Chicago), and ELS Language Centers/San Diego. He retired from being the academic director at ELS Language Centers/San Diego. He has made over 30 presentations at TESOL, CATESOL, and NAFSA conferences, and has served as an officer in all three organizations. He has been a site reviewer for the Commission on English Language Program Accreditation (CEA), since 2005, and served for three years as a Commissioner on the CEA board. He received a bachelor's degree in linguistics from the University of Kansas and a master's degree in educational leadership from San Diego State University. He has taught at UCSD Extension for over 15 years, having taught courses in Linguistics for Language Teachers, Culture in the Language Classroom, Teaching and Testing ESL Reading and Writing Skills, and The Role of Grammar in Teaching a Second Language.
